Betsy Ross was born on January 1, 1752 in Philidelphia, Pennsylvania. She grew up there with her 17 siblings.

She worked in her family's upholstery business and went to a Quaker school.

She married John Ross in 1772, but he was killed by a gunpowder explosion during the start of the American Revolution.

She re-married Joseph Ashburn, in 1777, but he was also killed by British soldiers that captured his ship.
