AMSTERDAM

Amsterdam is the capital city of The Netherlands. It is also the setting of the story.

Germany invaded The Netherlands on May 10, 1940. About 60,000 Jews who lived in Amsterdam were sent to concentration camps.

THE HIDING PLACE

Anne and her family hid in the attic above a business her father owned. The entrance was hidden behind the bookcase you see in this picture.

ANNE FRANK

There were 8 people total who hid in the attic.

Anne kept a diary of the ever day goings on.

She was 13 years old when her family went into hiding.

OTTO FRANK

Anne's father, Otto Frank. His nickname is Pim. He was a wealthy business owner.

He and Anne have a very good relationship.

EDITH FRANK

Anne's mother-she and Anne have a strained relationship

MARGOT FRANK

Anne's older sister-she was 16 when her family went into hiding

MR. AND MRS . VAN PELS

Hermann and Auguste Van Pels

Hermann Van Pels helped Mr. Frank settle in when he moved to Amsterdam. Mr. Frank felt that he owed his success to Mr. Van Pels. Therefore, when the Franks went into hiding, Mr. Frnak offered their help to the Van Pels.

In her diary, Anne refers to the Van Pels as Mr. and Mrs. Van Daan.

"Mrs. Van Daan" often refers to her husband as "Putti."

PETER VAN PELS

Peter Van Pels is the Van Pels only son. He is also referred to by the last name Van Daan throughout Anne's Diary.

He and Anne become romantically interested in one another when they are in hiding together.

He was 15 when they went into hiding.

FRITZ PFEFFER

Fritz Pfeffer was a Jewish dentist who came to live with the Franks and the Van Pels a few months after they went into hiding.

In her diary, Anne refers to him as Mr. Dussel-which translates roughly as "idiot."

Victor Kugler

Anne refers to Victor Kugler as Mr. Kraler in her diary.

Victor Kugler helped hide the Franks, Van Pels, and Mr. Pfeffer.

He was put into work camps after they were discovered. He was able to escape the work camps, though, and he survived the war.

MIEP GIES

Perhaps the most famous of Anne's helpers, Miep was the secretary in the building in which the 8 were hiding.

She found Anne's diary after they were taken, and she kept it safe. After the war, she and her husband helped Otto Frank get back on his feet.

She has received several honors and awards for her efforts.

She died in 2010 at the age of 101.
