GRAVITY IN SPACE!

HOW DOES IT WORK?

What is Gravity?

Gravity is a force pulling together all matter. The more matter, the more gravity, so things that have a lot of matter such as planets or moons pull stronger.

HOW DO WE USE GRAVITY?

IS IT HELPFUL?

Gravity in our lives

Gravity pulls us to the Earth every day, and we pull back. Our gravity is equal to Earth's, but we can't move Earth. However, Earth can move us because it is so much more massive.

GRAVITY IN OUR GALAXY

(AND OTHERS AS WELL)

Orbits are a great example of gravity in space. Orbits are caused by a perfect balance of gravity and forward motion.

An object with a lot of mass goes forward and wants to keep going forward; however, the gravity of another body in space pulls it in. There is a continuous tug-of-war between the one object wanting to go forward and away and the other wanting to pull it in.

FIRST

OBJECT SPEEDS BY PLANET WITH LOTS OF MOMENTUM.

SECOND

GRAVITY ATTRACTS OBJECT TO THE PLANET AND VICE VERSA.

THIRD

OBJECT CONTINUES TO TRY TO MOVE FORWARD, BUT IS PULLED DOWN BY GRAVITY.

LAST

THE RESULT IS A BALANCE OF FORCES PULLING AND PUSHING THE OBJECT, MAKING A CIRCULAR ORBIT.
