The Enlightnement

• A movement that stressed logic and reason that would lead to many
• democratic ideas in Americas future.

Scientific revolution

• The revolution in which people started to look more to math and science for
• answers rather than church and religion.
• It is also the movement where people began to believe that the sun was the 
• center of the universe not earth

Thomas Hobbes

• One of the four major enlightenment thinkers
• Believed in absolute monarchy because people are greedy and selfish

Montesquieu

• One of the four major enlightenment thinkers
• Came up with the idea of Separation of powers which splits the government

Rousseau

•  Came up with the idea of Consent of the governed, an example of which is voting
• One of the four major enlightenment thinkers

John Locke

• One of the four important enlightenment thinkers
• Natural rights: Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of happiness
• govt. should protect rights, and if the govt. does not, people should rebel against the govt

Checks and Balances

• The power the three branches of the government uses to make sure that the
• other branches are unbalanced

Democracy

• A government ran by the people that favors equality and voting

Monarchy

• A government that favors having a king that has "divine right."
