  • An earthquake is the result of a sudden release of energy in the earths crust
  • Are caused by movement of plates or volcanic activity
  • Powerful waves that have destuctive capabilities

CHRISTCHURCH EARTHQUAKE

  • The christchurch earthquake occured in september of 2010
  • It measered 7.1 on the richter scale
  • This earthquake caused an enourmous fracture along the land
  • It allowed scientists to directly measure the movement of the longest fault line
  • Of the greendale fault

HOW TO SURVIVE AN EARTHQUAKE

  • Seek shelter under stable tables and door frames
  • If out side stay away from building,bridges and electrical pylons
  • Listen to the radio and follow instructions from the authorties

How Ireland Helped

  • Construction workers and health care professionals went to christchurch
  • To help those affected by the earthquake. Workers where sent with
  • Expertise in health, construction and electrical engineering
  • The amount of unemployed people which moved to new zealand
  • In the economic downturn doubled.

PREVENTATIVE MEASURES

  • No measures can be taken to stop an earthquake
  • But limeted measures can be taken to reduce damages
  • Earthquake proofing can be taken in the design of houses and offices

  • And sent some funds to aid the reconstruction of the city
