FETAL DEVELOPMENT TIMELINE & TOP 10 LIST

RUHI DESHMUKH

WEEK 1

  • Pregnancy is tracked from first day of your last period
  • Uterus is thickened in order to hold fertilized egg

WEEK 2

  • Ovulation occurs
  • If sperm makes its way to the egg, fertilization will occur
  • Some spotting may occur

WEEK 3

  • Sperm and egg have created zygote
  • Zygote continues dividing throughout
  • These cells will create organs of baby

WEEK 4

  • Embryo is attached to the wall of the uterus
  • Amniotic sac begins to form
  • Baby may be seen on ultrasound

WEEKS 5-9

  • Pregnancy symptoms usually occur
  • Organs are beginning to form
  • Heart begins to beat
  • Face is beginning to form

WEEKS 9-13

  • Brain connections are beginning to form
  • Baby is becoming active in the womb
  • Possibility of miscarriage is lowered
  • Baby bump begins to show
  • End of first trimester

WEEKS 14-17

  • Developing fingerprints
  • Muscles are strengthening
  • "Pregnancy Glow" is becoming prominent
  • All systems are functioning in body
  • Woman's breasts are enlarging

WEEKS 18-21

  • Gender can be revealed
  • Baby can hear you
  • Baby's hairs are growing in
  • Halfway point of pregancy
  • Mom will gain 1/2 pound every week from here on out
  • Teeth are growing in

WEEKS 22-24

  • Baby's sex organs are starting to develop
  • Senses are developing
  • Lung function is complete
  • Baby can now function outside of the womb
  • Fingernails are present

WEEKS 25-26

  • Gestational diabetes may occur in mom
  • Skin is becoming less transparent
  • Heart beat is becoming easier to hear
  • Baby may be sensitive to light
  • End of second trimester

WEEKS 27-29

  • Baby can now have dreams as brain connections are forming even more
  • Mom can feel almost all baby's movements
  • Baby is more aware of senses

WEEKS 30-32

  • Mom's joints are loosening to prepare for birth
  • "Practice contractions" may occur
  • Mom is gaining about 1 pound a week
  • Excess hair is falling off baby

WEEKS 33-36

  • Bones inside skull remain soft
  • Most major organs are functioning
  • Baby is downward facing birthing position
  • Mom may feel more pressure on bladder due to baby's positioning

WEEKS 37-38

  • Pregnancy is full term
  • Baby is preparing for labor
  • Most of baby's weight is fat
  • Brain controls most functions of body
  • Reflexes are active

WEEK 39

  • Mom can feel all baby movement
  • "Braxton Hicks contractions" are more prominent
  • Mom feels more discomfort, heartburn, etc

WEEK 40

  • Final week (although some babies don't arrive on schedule)
  • Mom's must be prepared for baby to arrive at any time

Pregnancy Top 10's (1-4)

  • Exercise- Help control weight, relate hormones, and improve sleep
  • Be Prepared- Do you want an epidural? What kind of birth do you want?
  • Eat Well- Make every calorie count and don't over eat
  • Stay Hydrated- Drink plenty of water so you don't get exhausted easily or dehydrated.

Pregnancy Top 10's (5-7)

  • Watch the Weight- Excessive weight gain during pregnancy can cause problems later on
  • Avoid Chemicals- It's important to avoid artificial or unhealthy meals and materials in order to protect your body
  • Stay Calm- Try to avoid stress as much as possible to not cause distress and to keep you and you baby happy

Pregnancy Top 10's (8-10)

  • Take your vitamins- It is important to make sure you and your baby are getting the proper nutrients in order to be healthy
  • Take time for yourself- It is important to take time for yourself to pamper and de-stress
  • Educate yourself- Learn about childbirth and the pros and cons of your actions
