Spirituality vs. Church

2006-2011

Markt Schwaben, 5 years old start-up church, 50-100 volunteers

worked!

  • "lean" structures
  • establish church in politics & public life
  • bought rooms for €1m
  • build & trained teams

failed!

  • gap between 17-40 yrs
  • change resistance
  • ideological barriers

Is it possible to make "church" work for generation x/y?

2012-2013

CityChurch München, revived start up, 15 volunteers, up to 30 visitors

What should a "postmodern" church look like?

CITY CHURCH MUNICH - OUR CONCEPT

  • lean/organic structures
  • easy (life is complex enough)
  • low barriers
  • serving leadership, transparency
  • simple beliefs, wide interpretation

CITY CHURCH MUNICH - OUR CONCEPT

  • services only 2 times/month
  • just 1 additional organized meeting/week
  • no rooms: services at "Kultfabrik", meetings at home/bars...
  • no membership, just "commitment"
  • "Jesus" as center point, no "hard" confessions

Exit 2013

problems

  • ≈95% "red sea" people, looking for a "cooler" church
  • no hard, but many soft confessions (morale, theology...)
  • fear-driven co-visions ("we need to say what´s right!")
  • flat hierarchy >>> many "specialists"
  • missunderstanding of "easy" >>> chilled

1 human centered

Churches are experts for God, but driven by human needs.

2 character before behaviour

Doing good things doesn´t mean to be good.

3 love the errors

Grace is the permission to try and fail.

4 proud to be nostalgic

Keep content, change boxing.
