  • Ecumenical council: (the first in a century) to bring the church up to date
  • Second Vatican Council: old doctrines and desciplines are reexamined
  • Wrote encyclical letters: "Mother and Teacher", " Peace on Earth"

  • Brought together leaders from different nations
  • Helped developing countries achieve independence
  • First modern Pope whose teachings attracted audiences beyond-
