Romans and the Greeks also wore wigs depending on the fashion and customs of the movement. Roman hairstyles required that woman brush their hair forward and create a mass of tight curls at the front.

WIG CONSTRUCTION

THERE ARE TWO METHODS OF ATTACHING HAIR TO WIGS:

CAP WIGS
AND
CAPLESS WIGS

CAP WIGS

Cap wigs consist of an elasticized mesh-fiber base to which the hair fiber is attached. This method is the first and oldest type of wig construction and are produced most often as handmade wigs. Cap wigs are suitable for individuals who suffer from baldness or have very thin hair. These wigs are often more expensive because they are handmade.

WEFTS

Cap wigs are made by weaving the root ends of the hair onto a warp of three silk threads to form a sort of fringe called a "weft". The wefts are then sewn to a foundation made of net or other material. In modern times, the wefts can also be made with a specially adapted sewing machine, reducing the amount of hand labour involved.

CAPLESS WIGS

Capless wigs are wigs that have rows sewn together, without using a solid cap as the base. Every capless wig is made with exclusive monofilament two layer designs and through hand crafted weaving techniques. When making the cap-less wigs, thin cotton or lace ribbons are used to hold wefts of hair that are sewn onto them, instead of using a solid cap, as is the case with a cap wigs. After that, the ribbons are then joined together to form a wig. The ribbons flexibility and ability to stretch enables them to conform to the wearer’s shape of head. They are light-weight, cool and comfortable.

Wigs may be hand tied, machine tied, or semi-hand tied.

When helping a client select a wig, the wig's construction is significant in determining the best value in the clients price range.

FUN FACT!

A PUBIC WIG IS CALLED A MERKIN.

WIG COMPOSITION

Wigs and hairpieces are made of human hair. Asian, Indian or European.

European hair is the most costly, hair from India is wavy and hair from Asia is straight.

Modacrylic wig fibers are formulated from petroleum products and produced as very long threads. Shades are almost unlimited so that human hair colors can be closely duplicated.

A human hair strand will burn slowly and produce an odor. A synthetic fiber will either ball up on the end, extinguish itself or burn very rapidly and produce no odor. The hair is specifically treated to protect against possible damage from styling services. Since the supply of human hair for the manufacturing of wigs is limited these wigs are the most expensive.

Animal hair wigs made of yak, angora horse or sheep hair have even less resemblance to human hair than modacrylic fibers.

WIG COLORS

The standard hair color ring used by wig and hairpiece manufacturers is the J and L ring. The ring contains 70 numbered samples from black to palest blonde.
