YOUR CONSCIENCE

BY: ANU LAKKAMSANI

WHAT IS YOUR CONSCIENCE?

  • The voice in your head telling you what to do
  • The scientific name for the voice in the back of your head is called 'inner speech'
  • Inner Speech: A form of internalized, self-directed dialogue: talking to oneself in silence.

THE IMPORTANCE OF INNER SPEECH

  • Talking to ourselves is important in developing a sense of self
  • When one loses the ability to talk to themselves, the brain and person simply exist
  • To simply exist means that that person would lose the capabillity to foreshadow

WHAT HAPPENS IF YOU LOSE INNER SPEECH?

  • To simply exist: the inability to talk to themselves about what is happening in their mind
  • Quote from Scott Moss, a victim of stroke who lost his inner speech
  • "I had lost the ability to engage in self talk. In other words I did not have the ability to think about the future...
  • ...to worry, to anticipate or perceive it- at least not with words. Thus for the first 4 weeks after hospitilization..
  • ...I SIMPLY EXISTED."

I BET YOU DID NOT KNOW...

  • That the voice of your 'conscience' is the brain predicting your own voice
  • Inner speech makes it possible to form a relationship with ourselves
  • The way your conscience speaks to you is based on the way people talked to you as a child
  • The voice in your head is influenced by your emotions
