SOUTH CAROLINA

FOUNDER

  • In 1500's, the Spanish and the French vied over the coast of South Carolina
  • After both the French and Spanish settlements failed, Sir Francis Drake took over the area and gave to the King
  • South Carolina then became part of the Providence of Carolina
  • The land was given to a group of people called the Lords Proprietors by King Charles II

REASONS FOUNDED

  • South Carolina was founded because eight nobles were given a charter to settle the land
  • Also, many merchants were coming to South Carolina to build factories and plantations

PEOPLE WHO SETTLED HERE

  • The people that settled in the colony were a mixture of races
  • But most the people were either from England or from the English Colony of Barbados.

CLIMATE AND GEOGRAPHY

  • The Climate of South Carolina is subtropical with hot summers and not very cold winters.
  • On average, between 40-80 in. (1,000-2,000 mm.) of precipitation fall per year.
  • South Carolina is on the South Eastern coast of North America.
  • It lies above Georgia, but below North Carolina.

ECONOMY

  • The economy was largely agricultural because of the very rich soil.
  • Also, the economy relied on cheap African slaves to work the factories and plantations.

RELIGION

  • In South Carolina, the religious beliefs were almost the same as the other Southern colonies.
  • They were Christians, but didn't practice as much as other colonies.
  • The Southern colonies focused more on business

POLITICS

  • South Carolina's government was based on Republicanism
  • Which is about liberty, unalienable rights, and rejects inherited political power.
  • This forn of government is how we run our government runs today
