VALLEY

  • Definition: A low area of land between hills or mountains, typically with a river or stream flowing through it
  • Example: Valley of Flowers, (India)

PLAIN

  • Definition: A large area of flat land with few trees
  • Example: Great Northern Plains, (USA)

REEF

  • A ridge of jagged rock, coral, or sand just above or below the surface of the sea
  • Example: Great Barrier Reef, (Australia)

PLATEAU

  • Definition: An area of relatively level high ground
  • Example: Kukenan Temple, (Venezuela)

ISLAND

  • Description: A piece of land surrounded by water
  • Example: Hawaii

RIVER

  • Definition: A large natural stream of water flowing in a channel to the sea, a lake, or another such stream
  • Example: Mississippi River

LAKE

  • Definition: A large body of water surrounded by land
  • Example: Great Salt Lake

MOUNTAIN

  • Definition: A large natural elevation of the earth's surface rising abruptly from the surrounding level, a large steep hill
  • Example: Mount Everest, (Nepal)

STRAIT

  • Definition: A narrow passage of water connecting two seas or two large areas of water
  • Example: Bering Straight (Connects Arctic ocean to Pacific ocean)

PENINSULA

  • Definition: A piece of land almost surrounded by water or projecting out into a body of water
  • Example: Florida

ISTHMUS

  • Definition: A narrow strip of land with sea on either side forming a link between two larger areas of land
  • Example: Isthmus of Chignecto links Nova Scotia to North America and Canada

ARCHIPELAGO

  • Definition: A sea or stretch of water containing many islands
  • Example: New Zealand

CANYON

  • Definition: A deep gorge, typically one with a river flowing through it
  • Examples: Antelope Canyon, (Arizona)

DELTA

  • Definition: A triangular tract of sediment deposited at the mouth of a river, typically where it diverges into several outlets
  • Example: Nile Delta, (Northern Egypt)
