SIZE

  • Adults average size is 20-56 in.
  • Adults average weight is about 2lb.
  • 4-6 feet long
  • 90-190 centimeters

WHERE IT IS LOCATED

  • Mainland Florida and East Maine
  • Florida Keys and Northeastern Texas
  • Eastern United States and Minnesota

COLORS

  • They are both dorasally (green,tan,or blue-grey)and ventrally ( yellow to cream )
  • Baby's are different colors than the adults
  • Baby's are Light gray ground, series of brown saddles dorasally and blotches along the side
  • As the young snakes age, these dark markings fade from the tail -
  • towards the head and the ground color becomes green gray or tan

PATTERN

  • The young are mistaken from gopher snakes
  • Their tail has a solid color
  • There are very tiny red blotches
  • There are 17 dorsal scale rows at mid body.

  • Small mammals

HUNTING PREY

  • They overpower their prey.
  • They simply grab it in their jaws.
  • Then, they press it into the ground until it stops suffering.
  • Finally, they eat their prey.

  • They bite to defend themselves.
  • The bite is slightly painful.
  • You will bleed if you get bit.

LAYS EGGS

  • It lays 6-20 eggs at a time.
  • They lay them from May to August.
  • Newborns are 6-9 inches after they hatch

  • The pupils are round and black.
  • Their noses are rounded
  • They have a forked tounge
  • They have a rounded head

FUN FACTS

  • They may look like a cottonmouth
  • You can tell the apart by their slender body's
  • When frightened they make a buzzing sound
  • They emit a foul ador
  • Reproduction (female) 2-3 (male) 1-2 years old

  • They have a life span of 10 years
  • The snake doesn't have a pit
  • They have no negative effects on humans
  • If handled or harassed they may bite
