Complex process that can create progress for one group or idea and decline for another

Periodization

Which events or developments constitute a period in history?

History is causes and consequences

Change is driven by multiple causes and creates multiple consequences

Causes and consequences vary in their influence

Duration
Region
Group

The interplay of people (individuals or groups)

Conditions
(Social, political, economic, cultural)

Consequences can be unintended

Historical events are NOT inevitable

Perspective on history changes

Historical context- how did people feel, think, act in the moment?
Based on evidence

We must try to understand.

Passing judgement is often too simplistic

Include the contributions, sacrifices, and injustices of marginalized groups
