Native Alaskan art is a example of the Native Alaskan history, skills, traditions and around twenty thousand years of life in some parts of Alaska.The art of Athabascan people may also include decorations on skin, clothing, or some carvings and sculpting of masks and useful objects.
Athabascan baskets are the most common form of art made by Athabascan woman. To make these baskets woman weave grass or hay found in fields. Most of the time reed is used as it is available, sometimes oak, hickory or willow may be used.
Carving, is a reflection of the native Alaskan spirits, animals or places. These carvings are usually masks, tools and can even be on canoes. Some tribes carve Tatum poles and put them outside their houses, these can usually reflect the mothers clan. Carving is usually carved on birch trees or oak.
Most types of native Alaskan face painting is cultural. The colours and designs are usually past down through generations of their particular tribe. Paints used in this face painting are made from animal fat, berries and fish skin.
