WOMEN'S ROLES THROUGHOUT HISTORY: 1950'S

CUSTOMS IN DATING, MARRIGE, DIVORCE, AND OWNERSHIP OF PROPERTY

  • Divorce wasn't common because of social pressure.
  • There was a lot of social pressure to be the perfect couple.
  • The couples were supposed to get married right after high school.
  • Dating was somewhat a popularity statement, it was not only based on love.
  • For the majority of women, if they owned property they inherited it.

Customs regarding Education and Employment for Women

  • In this time period, 32% of all college students were women.
  • Most women's rights movements increased job opportunity.
  • During WWII women took the jobs that men would've held.
  • They took jobs mostly in the factories.
  • After WWII they took the more nurturing jobs such as teaching or nursing.

Women's place in society regarding dresscode

  • During this period, even showing your shoulder was "revealing."
  • Women were expected to look perfect in appearance but also conservative.
  • Many ads in this time emphasized the importance of a woman's looks.
  • Women had strong desires to look perfect because of social pressure.
  • Women started to wear shorts, pants, and even sports wear.

WOMEN'S OPINION OF THEIR PLACE IN SOCIETY AND THEIR WRITING

  • Society wanted women to be perfect.
  • Women often wrote about their dreams and desires.
  • Women didn't question their place in society until the 1960's.
  • Women were supposed to play certain roles in society.
  • These roles were things such as a diligent homemaker, being obidient, and clever.
