PURPOSE OF SOUTHERN CAMPAIGN

  • The Southern Campaign began with British concern over the course of the war in the North.
  • The majority of the fighting in the Carolinas took place during the Southern Campaign
  • The Southern Campaign took place during 1780 and 1781
  • George Washington decided to put a new leader, Nathanael Greene, in charge of the Southern Campaign

PARTISAN TROOPS AND GUERILLA WAREFARE

  • A militia is a person who is trained to fight as a soldier but isn't apart of the army
  • During the American Revolution groups used guerrilla warefare for surprise attacks
  • Guerrilla warfare- form of irregular warfare in which a small group of combatants such as armed civilians

BATTLE OF SAVANNAH, CAMDEN, AND CHARLESTON

  • The Capture of Savannah, or sometimes the First Battle of Savannah was an American Revolutionary War battle fought on December 29, 1778 between American Patriot militia and Continental Army units holding the city and a British Invasion.
  • On April 2, 1780, Americans suffer their worst defeat of the revolution, with the surrender of General Benjamin Lincoln to British Lieutenant General Sir Henry Clinton and his army of 10,000 at Charleston

  • The Battle of Camden was a major victory for the British in the Southern theater of the American Revolutionary War.

Summary -
The Southern Campaign began with British concern over the course of the war in the North. The Battle of Cowpens, in context of the Southern Campaign, was the turning point of the war in the South. In truth, the Revolution was won in the South, and Cowpens played a major role in the victory.
