Background

  • David C. McClelland was born on May 20, 1917 in Mt Vernan NY
  • He was awarded bachelor of arts at Wesleyan University an MA from the University of Missouri and PhD in experimental psychology from Yale University

Primary Contribution

  • In 1987, McClelland received the American Psychological Association Award for Distinguished Scientific Contributions.
  • He was credited with developing the Achievement Motivation Theory also known as achievement or non- achievement theory.

Changing Psychology

  • McClelland is most famously known and talked about with the achievement and motivation aspect
  • However, his work led more towards consciousness and personality

Workplace

  • McClelland did his work at Connecticut College and Wesleyan University
  • In 1956 the psychologists went on to work at Harvard for decades

Influences

  • He used Freud, to discuss unconscious motivation, Russell A. Clark to understand how sexual motivation affects fantasy, and James Olds to study the physiology of reward as a motivational force.
  • He helped add to the ideas of Frederick Herzberg
