The actual year when the Beatles were born was 1957, when John started the group The Blackjacks. At the time, he neither knew any of the other "Beatles" nor played with them.
Most people agree that the Beatles started in 1960, because this is the first time that they were actually called "The Beatles". Before that they went through many names, including The Quarrymen, The Nerk Twins, Long John and the Silver Beetles, The Beat Brothers, and The Silver Beetles. They had lucky timing - the appearance was during one of the worst winters in UK history - which meant that they had a huge TV audience, also there was a high percentage of young people in the UK - the babyboomer generation (born in 1946/7 after WW2 finished) were teenagers.
