ANCIENT CIVILIZATIONS AND THE STARS.

CHICHEN ITZA TEMPLE.

  • Built by the Maya people of post classic.
  • Located in the eastern portion of Yucatán state in Mexico.
  • Built for religious and cultural reasons.
  • The temple has 365 steps, one for each day of the year.
  • Twice a year on the spring and autumn equinoxes, a shadow forms on steps in the shape of a serpent.

STONEHENGE.

  • No one knows who built this structure.
  • Located in Wiltshire, England.
  • No one knows exactly why it was built.
  • Could've possibly be built for a burial ground.
  • Showed when the summer solstice was.

ANGKOR WAT.

  • Built by Khmer King Suryavarman II.
  • Located in Yaśodharapura (present day Angkor).
  • This is the largest religious monument in the world.
  • Used for religious purposes.
  • Principal temples mirror the stars in the constellation Draco during spring equinox.

BIGHORN MEDICINE WHEEL.

  • Built by Plains Indians.
  • Located in Bighorn National Forest in Wyoming.
  • Built and used for worship, offerings, prayers, and healing,
  • Certain points indicate where the sun rises and sets on summer solstice.
  • Also showed where certain important stars rise helically.

CARACOL TEMPLE.

  • Built by the Mayas.
  • Located in the Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico.
  • It was built and used as a town.
  • Solstice and equinox alignments.
  • Star alignments.

MACHU PICCHU TEMPLE OF THE SUN.

  • Built by Sapa Inca Pachacuti.
  • Located in Cusco Region, Peru.
  • Was made and used as a royal estate.
  • They put many pieces of pottery to equilibrate the position of the sun.

EGYPTIAN PYRAMIDS.

  • Ancient Egyptians built these.
  • Structures are located all around Egypt.
  • These were built and used for tombs for Pharaohs.
  • The three largest pyramids of the Giza complex and the three middle stars of the constellation Orion.

TEOTIHUACAN PYRAMID OF THE SUN.

  • Built by the Teotihuacanos.
  • Located in Teotihuacan, Mexico.
  • The purpose of why it was built and what it was used for exactly is unknown.
  • The T-east orientation was a reminder for the sacred calendar of solar origin.

DZIBILCHALTUN TEMPLE OF THE 7 DOLLS.

  • Built by the Mayans.
  • Located in the Mexican state of Yucatán.
  • Built and used for observing solar phenomenons.
  • Mayan sun god showed feathers of fire through gates of the temple during the first days of spring and autumn.
