UNITARY SYSTEM

  • Power is held in the central govt.
  • Legal power is located in the central gov.

PROS

  • Uniformity
  • Fewer conflics
  • Less duplication
  • Less hoops to jump through

CONS

  • Out of touch
  • Slow response time
  • Lack of community
  • Less checks and balances

FEDERAL SYSTEM

  • A way of dividing the power between a central gov and jurisdictions
  • The means of dividing the power and functions of gov and central gov.
  • And a specified number of geographical defined regional jurisdictions.

PROS

  • Separation of powers
  • Checks and balances
  • Increased citizen participation
  • Gov responsiveness

CONS

  • Inefficiencief
  • Redundancy
  • Policy failures
  • Race to the bottom

CONFEDERAL SYSTEM

  • The central gov is weak and regional gov are powerful
  • A league of sovereign states in which a limited central.
  • Gov exercises few independent powers.

PROS

  • Keeps power at local levels
  • Minimizes growth of central gov
  • Member states can cooperate and matters of common concern
  • Local gov have a great deal of freedom to act as they wish

CONS

  • Decentralized federal power
  • Weakened the nations ability to trade for foreign goods
  • Left a central gov unanle to generate its own operating funds
  • Could not force individual states to help other states
