In 1652, the Dutch Jan Van Riebeeck founded the first colony in Cape Colony. In 1795 the British took power and set up colonies. They gave it back to the Dutch in 1803, and retook it in 1806.
Together with Mozambique and Zimbabwe they have about 100,000 square miles of wildlife preservation area.
It is the only country named for its geographical location.
