JEWISH HOLIDAYS

  • Also described as Jewish Festivals or 'Yom Tov'
  • Yom Tov meaning: literally, "a good day"
  • On these certain days the Torah prohibits work (let's all convert)
  • Work is defined differently for Yom Tov as to Shabbat

"MELACHA"

  • The most common feature of Shabbat and Biblical festivals
  • is the requirement to refrain from "work" or melacha on these days
  • Defined in Jewish Law by 39 categories of labor
  • On Shabbat and Yom Kippur all melacha is prohibited
  • On Yom Tov most melacha is restricted other than the preparation of food

THE DAY OF REST

  • Shabbat, weekly observance of God's completion of creation
  • Starting Friday night an hour before sunset
  • Lasts for 25 hours until sunset on Saturday night
  • Considered the most important of all Jewish holidays

SHABBAT VS. YOM TOV

  • Shabbat is on the day the weekly cycle transcends itself
  • We can think of this abstractly, a day going beyond the limits of the week
  • Yom Tov, used as a greeting for Yom Tov holidays (ex. Rosh Hashanah)
  • Other greetings; "Shanah tovah" meaning "a good year";
  • "Shana tova u'metukah" meaning "a good sweet year"

THERE ARE SIX DAYS

of the year called Yom Tov
