ANCESTRAL MUSIC

  • Can be traced to 7,000-8,000 BC
  • Xia, Shang, and Zhou: Only wealthy could enjoy music
  • Music became mainstream in Tang Dynasty
  • Song: new opera arose such as Zaju and Nanxi
  • Ming and Qing: Opera became very popular

  • Ming and Qing: 京剧 becomes very popular
  • Folk Songs were created by peasents

  • Government cencorship of music begins

1950-70S

  • MaoZheDong becomes leader
  • Music becomes more patriotic and revolutionary
  • Music is censored by government
  • Western music and ideas are outlawed
  • Cultural Revolution ends in 1976

1980S

  • Tiananmen Square revolt surges hope through China
  • Revolt popularizes the song Northwest Wind
  • This song spawns music against government

1990S

  • Rock hits China
  • New genre of music called gangtai.
  • Gangtai music is very romantic pop music
