Igneous

  • Rocks formed by magma that cools and solidifies.
  • Extrusive- rocks that cool above the Earth's surface.
  • Intrusive- rocks that cool below the Earth's surface.
  • Examples: Coal and Halite

Sedimentary

  • Many rocks compressed over time into one rock.
  • Clastic- rocks from pieces of other rocks compacted.
  • Chemical- rocks form from dissolved materials.
  • Biochemical- organically made from plants and animals.
  • Examples: Limestone, Hemate, and Fossils

Metamorphic

  • rocks changed by extreme heat and pressure.
  • Foliate- rocks produced by extreme heat and pressure. 
  • Nonfoliated- rocks that do not have layers or a banded appearance.
  • Examples: Marble, and Sandstone
