EARLY LIFE

  • Poe was born Jan. 18, 1809 in Boston, Mass.
  • His mother was an actress named Elizabeth Arnold Hopkins Poe
  • She died when he was two of pulmonary tuberculosis
  • His dad David left when he was a baby
  • Poe was then adopted by John and Frances Valentine Allan

RELATIONSHIPS

  • Poe was involved with a number of women
  • His first wife was named Virginia. Oddly she was his cousin in 1835
  • He was 27, she was 13. She died in 1847
  • Sarah Helen Whitman and Nancy, he was engaged to both
  • within the year 1848.

EDUCATION

  • Poe was a well educated man
  • He attended a grammar school in Scottland
  • But fell into debt and became very poor
  • He decided to leave

EDUCATION (CONT.)

  • In 1830 he attended West Point Military Acedemy
  • But unfortunately he was dishonorably discharged
  • due to not attending classes or church

PUBLISHING

  • In 1841 Poe's first work was published
  • It was called Murders in the Rue Morge
  • In 1845 he published "The Raven" the piece to make him famous
  • Poe is credited with being the founder of detective stories

DEATH

  • Poe died October 3, 1849
  • His last words were "Lord help my poor soul."
  • The cause is unknown and no medical records have been found
  • Theories range from syphilis, to rabies, to cooping
