PRESENTATION OUTLINE

EVIDENCE-BASED PRACTICES & WRITING INSTRUCTION:

Inquiry Into Writing Assessment and Instruction for 3rd Grade SAI.

INQUIRY Q:
How do I systematically use assessment data to guide writing instruction, and show evidence of its impact on writing quality?

Evidence-Based Practices (EBPs)

ARE EFFECTIVE IN IMPROVING LEARNING OUTCOMES FOR STUDENTS.

EBPs THAT FIT MY INQUIRY QUESTION:

1. Direct Instruction (Hattie)

2. Reinforcing Effort & Providing Recognition (Marzano)

3. Self-Management (NPDC)

Self-Regulated Strategy Development (SRSD)

IS A RESEARCH--BASED APPROACH TO WRITING INSTRUCTION.

My inquiry is directed towards using
SRSD
for Writing Instruction.

Self-Regulation, Motivation & Writing Strategies

SRSD Helps Writers Organize Tasks by Practicing Procedures for

SRSD FRAMEWORK
Six Stages of Writing Instruction:

1.ACTIVATE BACKGROUND KNOWLEDGE

2. DISCUSS IT

3. MODEL IT

4. PRACTICE THE STRATEGY

5. SUPPORT IT

6. PROVIDE INDEPENDENT PRACTICE

Connections Between

EBPs and SRSD

1. Direct Instruction (Hattie)-- Central to initial stages of SRSD. Systematically guided by assessment data (writing and observations).

2. Reinforcing Effort & Providing Recognition (Marzano)-- SRSD targets motivational aspects that are crucial to navigating the process of writing.

3. Self-Management (NPDC)-- SRSD focuses on helping a writer develop self-regulatory procedures, such as goal setting & self-monitoring.

Further exploration of the EBPs and SRSD will inform decisions about which factors to consider when planning writing lessons & assessing writing quality.
