SANTA MARIA

  • Erupted in 1902 in Guatemala
  • One of the largest eruptions in the 20th century
  • Left a large crater nearly a mile across
  • The violent explosion came after the volcano had sat silent for roughly 500 years

CURRENT ACTIVE VOLCANO

MOUNT NYIRAGONGO

  • Located inside Virunga National Park
  • Main crater is about 2 km wide
  • Contains a lava lake
  • Nyiragongo’s lava lake has been the most voluminous known lava lake in recent history
  • responsible for 40% of Africa’s historical volcanic eruptions

WHAT A VOLCANO DOES TO ENVIRONMENTS

  • Releases sulfur duoxide and CO2
  • SO2 effects acid rain
  • SO2 can cause solar radiation
  • SO2 is capable of colling the atmosphere
