Basic Information

  • She was born on August 10, 1910
  • She died on September 5, 1997 (age 87)
  • She her nationality was Ottoman, Serbian, Bulgarian, Yugoslav and Indian
  • She was the Superior General (1950 - 1997)

EARly Life

  • Her birth name was Anjezë Gonxhe Bojaxhiu
  • She said that August 27 was her real birthday
  •  That was the day she was baptized into the church
  • Her father was into Albanian politics 
  • But he died when she was only eight 

More Early Life......

  • By the age of 12 she said she would commit her life to her religion 
  • When she was 18 she left her home and joined the Sisters of Loreto
  • She never saw her mother or sisters again
  • She  went to the Loreto Abbey in Rathfarnham, Ireland
  • To learn how to speak English so she can teach kids in India

Missionaries

  • She began her missionary work with the poor in 1948
  • She learned basic medical skills and went around the slums helping people
  • she started a school in Motijhil (Calcutta)
  • Soon she started tending to the needs of the destitute and starving.
  • In the beginning of 1949 she joined a group of young women  

More missionaries

  • The group wanted to create a new religious community  
  • The groups slogan was "poorest among the poor"
  • Her efforts quickly caught attention of Indian Officials   
  • Including the Prime Minister who expressed his appreciation 
  • But she wasn't getting no income so things were hard

World wide known

  • She rescued 37 children trapped in the front line of a hospital   
  • By making a temporary cease-fire between Israeli and Palestinian 
  • She helped minister to the hungry in Ethiopia
  • And victims at Chernobyl and earthquake victims in Armenia 
  • Her first missionary in the US was in South Bronx, New York 

HEalth problems

  • She suffered her first heart attack in Rome of 1983
  • her second one was in 1989
  • That's when she received an artificial pacemaker   
  • she had several more heart problems 

Her Death

  • She died on September 5, 1997
  • At the time of death she had over 4,000 sisters
  • And 610 missions in 123 countries
  • Her missions were aided by Co-Worker which numbered to 1 million

Recognition and reception

  • The Indian government gave her some awards
  • Padma Shri in 1962 
  • Jawaharlal Nehru Award for International Understanding in 1969
  • And the highest award for a civilian the  Bharat Ratna, in 1980
  • But in !979, received the biggest medal the Nobel Peace Prize
