THE STARFISH

BY: DAWSON LOCHRIDGE

REGENERATION

  • Many times in nature animals get attacked.
  • Animals adapt in order to survive these attacks.
  • Starfish have the ability to regenerate.
  • If a starfish loses an arm, it is able to grow it back.

EATING ADAPTATIONS

  • Some starfish have adapted to be carnivorous hunters.
  • They have adapted light-sensing eyespots.
  • These spots are located at the tips of there arms.
  • When they find a mollusk they grab them with their suction cups.
  • Once they have have their prey, they rip them open with their arms.

WHAT THEY EAT

  • Starfish are very slow animals.
  • Since they are slow, they had to adapt to eat slower creatures.
  • They adapted to have suction cups on their tentacles.
  • With these, they are able to wait until a creature comes along.
  • This helps them because they are just too slow to hunt.

THEIR STOMACH

  • Starfish eat creatures with shells.
  • They are also small creatures.
  • Starfish adapted to have two stomachs.
  • They also have the ability to externalize their stomach.
  • This allows them to eat creatures much larger than itself.

SUCTION CUPS

  • A starfishes suction cups allow them to stick to surfaces.
  • This allows a starfish to hang on to rocks through rough currents.
  • They also prevent getting washed up to shore from the tide.
