CHAPTER 17 OBJECTIVES

OBJECTIVE 1

  • Nomadic society developed by adapting to the conditions of arid lands
  • Without food crops or irrigation, they herded grazing animals
  • They followed migratory cycles, and lived of of every part of the animals
  • They often sought opportunities to trade with settled people
  • Nomads wanted products for their immidiate survival

OBJECTIVE 1

  • Nomadic people also participated in long-distance trade
  • They lead the caravans that crossed central Asia
  • There were 2 classes- nobles and commoners
  • The nobles did some governing and dealt with those who did not obey orders
  • Commoners would have to gain recognition to become a noble

OBJECTIVE 1

  • The earliest Turkish religion revolved around shamans
  • Turkish people started to convert to other religions
  • They began tto turn to Islam in the tenth century

OBJECTIVE 2

  • Nomadic warriors were great horsemen
  • They were also very good with a bow and arrow
  • Turkish nomads began in 1100 AD to take the wealth of settled societies
  • 8th-10th century: They approached Persia, taking over the borders
  • By 1055, Saljuq was the sultan

OBJECTIVE 2

  • They also started to migrate into Anatolia
  • The saljiuqs defeated the Byzantine army at Manzikert and took the Byzantine emperor
  • They transformed Anatolia
  • The Ghaznavids raided northern India
  • They eventually claimed the entiire territory of northern India

OBJECTIVE 2

  • They stripped the Buddhists and Hindus of their weatlh
  • They encouraged conversion to Islam
  • Persia, Anatolia, and India were military expansions of the nomadic peoples
