The water diffuses from an area with high concentration of water to an area with low concentration of water

HYPOTONIC SOLUTION
- Has more solute on the inside
- Water diffuses to the inside
- Cell swells or bursts
- More water flowing in than out

HYPERTONIC SOLUTION
- Has more solute on the outside
- Water diffuses to the outside
- Cell shrivels
- More water is flowing out than in

ISOTONIC SOLUTION
- Equal amounts of solute on each side
- Water diffuses in even amounts between both sides
- Cell remains in normal shape
