PRESENTATION OUTLINE

OSMOSIS

BY: KEVIN ZHANG

Osmosis is the diffusion of water from one side of a cellular membrane to another

The water diffuses from an area with high concentration of water to an area with low concentration of water

The side with more solute has less water; therefore, water flows to that side

The side with less solute has more water; therefore, water flows away from that side

HYPOTONIC SOLUTION

  • Has more solute on the inside
  • Water diffuses to the inside
  • Cell swells or bursts
  • More water flowing in than out

HYPERTONIC SOLUTION

  • Has more solute on the outside
  • Water diffuses to the outside
  • Cell shrivels
  • More water is flowing out than in

ISOTONIC SOLUTION

  • Equal amounts of solute on each side
  • Water diffuses in even amounts between both sides
  • Cell remains in normal shape
