The American Football League
needed one more team to complete the league.
They awarded this team to a man from Boston named William H. Sullivan Jr. He eventually named the team the Patriots.
How did the Patriots get their team name and logo?
The Patriots got their team name by having fans submit a team name. Thousands of people submitted a name and 74 of them said the Boston Patriots. A man from Boston Globe named Phil Bissell drew a cartoon of a minuteman snapping a football and the owner liked the drawing so much he made it the team logo. When the team moved out of Boston to Foxboro people rejected the name because they were no longer in Boston. The owners decided to make the team the New England Patriots.
