THE FLORIDA KEYS

The Florida Keys are a group of islands that surround the tip of Florida. They make up the southern-most point in the continental United States.

Geography:
The Keys are made up of ancient coral. There are over 1700 separate islands, consisting of about 30 inhabited islands. The Keys stretch from the eastern peninsula of Florida and curve down to Key West. Key West is only 90 miles away from Cuba. It is closer to Cuba than to Florida!

Well Known Places:
Let's start from the top. Key Largo is known as the Diving Capitol of the world, with its crystal blue waters and amazingly diverse marine life. Islamorada is known as the Sports Fishing Capitol of the World. The. The most popular of the Keys, a Key West. Key West is the most exciting Key of them all. Tourists and many locals flock here for fun and enjoyable memories.

Historical Places:
Come visit the Harry S. Truman Little White House. This was the winter White House for our former president. He traveled to this little house eleven times. Or you can visit the Dry Tortugas. Fort Jefferson is in the center of the island, it is made from over sixteen million red bricks. This fort was a place for shelter during the Spanish-American War.

Food:
The Florida Keys Cuisine is a mixture of all types of cuisine. Key lime pie is a very important part of the Keys cuisine. When traveling to the Florida Keys you should always try their key lime pie. This is where the type of pie originated. It is better than any Key Lime pie you have ever had!

Transportation:
When traveling in the Keys, you will find most of your time is in the car. There are many bridges. You can also travel by plane as there are two airports. One of them being in Key West and the other being in Marathon. Transportation is not very different from anywhere else in the United States.

Languages:
The majority of people in the Keys speak English. 17 percent of people, as of 2010, speak Spanish. There are also some small groups of languages like French Creole and Russian. They make up about 23 percent of the population.

Weather:
During most anytime of the year, it is about 70 degrees. The humidity stays at about 70%. The percent of sunshine is usually from 70% to 85%. It is a very nice climate for travelers!

Entertainment:
The Florida Keys have a lot to offer. Kayaking in the beautiful waterways that you can see your reflection in is always amazing. Fishing for the diverse fish that live in the Keys is also great. John Pennekamp State Park has a great diving and snorkeling department. Everything is so laid back and simple.

Arts and Culture:
The Florida Keys are appealing to people of all types of cultures. The islands are very vibrant and enthusiastic. There are many plays and orchestras. There are many elements that come together to make the Keys such a creative place.
