We've got 99 problems...

Small ideas to big solutions
In your experience as a nursing student and student at LU are there things you would like to see done differently? Is there a need that wasn't met? Or a policy that was flawed? An incident you wish didn't happen or could have been prevented?

Break up into 4-5 group and list 3 things.

Now from our list of 12-15 pick your top 2.

Alright from here we have 1 big problem we want to solve.

NO Engagement:
First 3 issues get on the board
Cast vote
Majority wins

Most programs, initiatives and policies are created because someones got beef with something.

Change happens because the status quo is either
- out of date
- flawed
- doesn't meet a need
- is non-existent
- or something happens to force change

Now given we selected X as our problem.

What are the experiences, data, numbers that tell us its a problem. Give me the why.

List these.

Legitimizing the issue

  • Statistical significance
  • Facts and figures
  • Feasibility
  • Impact and relevance
We just legitamized the issue in our previous brainstorm

There are many ways to do it. And its essential to do so.

You can provide the numbers and or stories as the argument or you can provide the lack-there-of as well.

Storytelling is a compelling way to engage an audience and stakeholders; if you can combine facts and figures with qualitative, or stories it can have a great deal of impact

Look, ALL the cool kids are doing it.

Generating buy in
So X is a problem for you.

How can we get other students to agree with us?

Who would be interested in the issue?
Who wouldn't be?
How do we engage each audience?

Making problem solving sexy...

  • Understanding and finding value for stakeholders
  • Selling these value points for buy in
  • Acquiring higher up support
  • Advocacy effort
Its important to consider the audience and who your problem and broiling up solution impacts.

Creating buy in points is key to keeping members engaged and invigorated in the work you do.

Some topics will be easier than others.

And as always, be sure to have the support of your superiors before going further. (Alcohol poster story)

SQUAD

making plans, crushing goals, and evaluating it
So whats our solution?

Can it be measured?

If so, how?

Planning and planning to evaluate...

  • Evaluation planning happens at the beginning of everything
  • Research and innovation do not have to be mutually exclusive
  • Strong plans and evaluation frameworks save even the biggest of flops
  • Plans should be measureable
  • Think S-M-A-R-T
planning is king.

Fail to plan and plan to fail.

And I cannot stress this enough. Our drafts are often crummy, so its important to have our ideas outlined systematically so we can re-trace our steps when something goes left.

Not all plans will succeed either, which isn't a bad thing.
Failing with a plan is still a success as you have a blueprint to work off of and highlight areas for improvement.

Without a plan you're shooting in the dark and surely you will miss the mark or worse, waste resources.

Snags & Hang Ups

When the struggle gets real.
What are some possible road blocks to the solution we are proposing?

Are there ways around it?

Sometimes you hit a detour...

  • Funding
  • Partnerships & competing priorities
  • Turn over
  • Lack of evidence
  • Politics
- Things rarely go as quickly or as smoothly as you hope so plan for these as best you can and come up with alternate routes a through z

- some are out of your control and are important to consider before you begin to launch into action in order to preserve resources

Boosters

Those TSN turning points
We all need a helping hand some times...

what in the school/city/politcal/student climate can we leverage to ensure success?

Making your project next level...

  • Stakeholders/ Partnerships
  • Resources
  • Momentum (internal/external)
  • Creativity
  • Utilizing tools from other disciplines
- There are always people at the ready wanting and waiting to help you just have to know where to look

T the P

Trust the process.
With a strong plan in place and all the variables accounted for its time to launch into action

But action takes time.

Its not as glamorous as the movies but it is worthwhile (My Mind My Art Project).
