PRESENTATION OUTLINE

DESCRIBE WHAT THE VIETNAM WAR WAS LIKE FOR YOU

  • I was prepared to go but never had to. I was a medic.
  • I was stationed in Pensacola, Florida and I had to rescue pilots that had to make emergency landings.
  • I did have friends who went to Vietnam. Some of them where killed.

HOW DID THE ASSASSINATION OF JFK AFFECT YOU?

  • On November 22, 1963, I was in boot camp. Everyone was very sad about the President.
  • Boot camp closed down for two days and stayed and talked in barracks.

HOW DID THE CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT AFFECT YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD

  • People in the neighborhood took pride in their homes and property.
  • The civil rights movement opened up the area to more African Americans moving in the area. Unfortunately, they did not have the same pride in taking care of their homes and the neighborhood declined.

DESCRIBE WHAT IT WAS LIKE IN THE NAVY

  • The Navy was a great learning experience. I learned about growing up and how to take orders from high ranking officers.
  • I learned how to accept the consequences of my actions and to be responsible.
  • This experience helped me form my value system.

DESCRIBE WHAT CLEVELAND WAS LIKE COMPARED TO NOW

  • Cleveland was quieter, much safer and a good environment.
  • Everybody would talk to everybody now people never talk.
  • Today, there are a lot more murders and crime.
  • Community mattered. There does not seem to be that feeling anymore.

DESCRIBE YOUR CHILDHOOD

  • It was a fun time. I was a very independent child. I was an only child and my parents worked a lot so I was was alone a lot. I played outside with friends
  • My friends and I rode bikes a lot from East Cleveland to Euclid.

DESCRIBE YOUR FIRST JOB

  • I had a paper route. I delivered papers. People fought over who would deliver papers.
  • I had two routes.One called Cleveland Press and Cleveland News. I made .50 to .75 cents.
  • I also had a morning route with the Cleveland Plain Dealer.
