THESIS

  • The San family's political beliefs and actions have led to many decades worth of corruption and violence in the country of Myanmar.

BACKGROUND

  • General Aung Sun was assassinated in 1947, which created chaos
  • Myanmar has been governed by a military junta until 2011
  • It has since become a unitary presidential constitutional republic

RIOTS AND REPRESSION

  • In 1987, currency devaluation wiped out many people's savings and triggered antigovernment riots
  • As a result of these riots, thousands of people are killed

AUNG SAN SUU KYI

  • "I could not as my father's daughter remain indifferent to all that was going on."
  • She was then propelled into leading the revolt against the then dictator, General Ne Win.

AUNG SAN SUU KYI (CONT)

  • She organized rallies and traveled all around the country calling for "democratic reform and free elections."
  • As a result of these rallies, the military coup placed Kyi on house arrest
  • During her house arrest in 1991, she won the Nobel Peace Prize

AUNG SAN SUU KYI (CONT)

  • She was in and out of house arrest for a long time
  • She was finally released for good in November 2010
  • She then rejoined the political process

ELECTIONS

  • 1990: NLD narrowly wins election; result ignored by military
  • 21 years later in 2011, Thein Sein is elected president
  • In 2012, the NLD candidates sweep the board in parliamentary by-elections, with Aung San Suu Kyi elected
  • Just this month, the NLD wins enough seats in parliament to form a government

SUMMARY

  • All started when Aung Sun was assassinated
  • Riots drove his daughter, Aung San Suu Kyi back to her home country to fight for peace
  • She is still fighting for a democracy in Myanmar
