Test of Phonological Awareness 2nd Edition Plus

  • Kindergarten
  • Early Elementary
  • Age ranges 5-8

Purpose

  • Measures the students' ability to isolate individual phonemes in spoken words and their knowledge of relationsips between letters and phonemes
  • Determines 'at risk' for early reading difficulties

Scoring

  • Score 1 or 0
  • Raw Scores are added and converted to SS

PROS

  • Can be used in a large or small setting
  • Can be used in general screening battery (relationship to early progress in reading)

CONS

  • SUPER OLD - 2004
  • Dialects of student and test administrator must be same
  • Results at risk if dialect does not match or if child's cultural background does not include certain items

Conclusion

  • Still is a good test that professionals can consitenly use with their young students that yield reliable data of phonological awareness.
