Symmetrical- Formal type of balance; achieved by placing identical objects on either side of central point. Ex: The butterfly's wings are equal to the body.

Asymmetrical- Informal type of balance; achieved by placing diff. objects on either side equally. Ex:This woman's hair is equal but really isn't. One side is shorter and the other longer.

Radial- Achieved by placing objects around a central point. Ex: The picture in the middle is the central point where the bowl shapes surround it.

Gradation- Rhythm created by gradual change in size or color. Ex: The sky goes from dark blue to light peach or light peach to dark blue.

Radiation- Rhythm created by identical objects coming from a central axis. Ex:The cherries come from the branch which come from the tree.

Opposition- Rhythm created by lines meeting at right angles, 90 degrees. Ex: The sugar has 90 degrees at every corner.

Harmony- Achieved through variety and unity. Must look like they belong together. Ex: The flowers look good with the branch, therefore they belong together.

Unity- Refers to a sense that everything of work belongs there, and makes a whole piece. Ex: The quilt is different pieces put together as one with the same balance all around.

Variety- Creates interest and uniqueness. Ex: The yellow flower makes the swirls pop more or the swirls make the flower pop out more.
