BACKGROUND INFORMATION
1200 A.D. - 1500 A.D.
Tenochitlan is the Capitol of the Aztecs. Which is one of the largest cities in the world.

AZTEC CULTURE
Everyone was educated but males were educated at a higher level
Girls were taught how to cook, run a home and care for a family
They were also taught about crafts.
Boys learned other trades,were taught fighting skills and leadership skills.
Their adult life would begin in their mid teen years.

Females would get married or stay in the temple to work.
Males would join the military or trade.
When death approached they would either be cremated or buried.

Aztec music was a constant and important part of life.
They didn't just listen to music for enjoyment but to make an emotional connection.
The most important Aztec game was ullamaliztli.

AZTEC FOOD
Maize is one of the main foods in this culture.
Aztec food also included beans and squash.
One of the greatest gifts to the world from Mexico is chocolate. The cocoa bean was highly treasured in the Aztec Empire.
The cocoa beans were used to make thick chocolate drink.
Atole which is a drink made from corn is very popular.

AZTEC ARTS AND CRAFTS
Common people were not allowed to own art but if you were making it or selling it you were allowed. Although only the rich could buy it.
Most of their art was based on jaguars, ducks, monkeys, snakes, deer, dogs
Many things were adorned with jewels and feathers
Everyone has been fascinated by their jewelry.
Craftsmen were dedicated to their job.
Aztec men and women would wear jewelry.

AZTEC CLOTHING
Aztec clothing was lose and it didn't cover their whole body.
Their clothes were made out of cotton
Clothing would unite people and separate them. Kind of like it does today

AZTEC DANCE
Aztecs dance to the beat of a drum.
As they dance they wear ornate feathered headdresses, beaded costumes and bells on their ankles and wrists.
