PRESENTATION OUTLINE
The Baby Boom:
- after the war the birth rate went up rapidly
- Americas population grew fast.
The G.I. Bill:
- this bill aided veterans/active servicemen with medical bills, purchasing homes, and education.
22nd Amendment (1951):
- This amendment stated that a president may be elected to office only twice, Franklin Roosevelt was the only president to be elected more than two times.
The Korean War:
- Korea was ruled by Japan from 1910 - 1945. After WW2, it was taken and divided into 2 separate parts. North developed a communist government, the South developed a non-communist government. And in 1950, North Korea invaded the South in an attempt to unify the country under communism rule. They signed a peace treaty saying we will not fight for a while. This war was from 1950 - 1953.
The arms and space race:
- 1952: hydrogen bomb was developed by the U.S.
- during the 1950s nuclear weapons were a major want/ need to the U.S. And the Soviet Union.
- 1957: the Soviets launched the first man made satellite called the Sputnik. This started the space race.
- We didn't launch until 1958.
Cases:
- In 1950, Julius and Ethel Rosenberg were charged with selling national secrets to the Soviets about making the Atomic Bomb. They were founded guilty and executed for being spy's.
- In 1950, Joseph McCarthy shocked Americans by saying that he has names of hundreds of communist in the government and in the military. He had no evidence so the senate censured, cut him off. When ever someone accused people of something with no evidence the term is called "McCarthyism".
New policy:
- 1957: Eisenhower announced he would send U.S. Forces to any Middle Eastern nation that requested help in defending communism. This extension of the containment policy became known as the Eisenhower Doctrine.
- 1956: Eisenhower signed the "Interstate Highway Act", which created a system of federal highways.
