SYMPTOMS

  • Fever or chills Persistent fatigue
  • Frequent or severe infections
  • Swollen lymph nodes
  • Recurrent nosebleeds
  • Excessive sweating, especially at night

  • Weakness
  • Losing weight without trying
  • Enlarged liver or spleen Easy bleeding or bruising
  • Tiny red spots in your skin (petechiae)
  • Bone pain or tenderness

CONDITIONS

  • Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia
  • Acute Myeloid Leukemia
  • Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia
  • Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia

PREVENTATIVE MEASURES
There is no known way to prevent most types of leukemia. Some types of leukemia may be prevented by avoiding high doses of radiation, exposure to the chemical benzene, smoking and other tobacco use, or certain types of chemotherapy used to treat other types of cancer.

CURE?
If leukemia is in remission for more than five years after treatment, it is considered cured. There is no guarantee that the disease will not return, or relapse, but the five-year mark is considered a very positive sign. Treatment to prevent such a relapse may be given even if the person is considered cured.
