HARLEM RENAISSANCE

TIME PERIOD: 1920-1930

FACTS :

  • talented group of writers , artist , and musicians made Harlem rennasisance
  • The home of an African American cultural movement during the 1920's
  • Philosopher Alain Locke proclaimed the movement "the new negro" (1925)

FACTS :

  • W.e.b du bois and James Weldon Johnson joined Locke in urging blacks to celebrate their heritage
  • The Harlem Renaissance was a period of intense creativity in music & visual arts
  • Many litterly works of the period in operated folk material & elements of the blues tradition

AARON DOUGLAS

  • Outside of literature , artist such as Henry ossawa tanner & Aaron Douglas made their mark also
  • Although the variety of the movement suffered during the Great Depression

AARON DOUGLAS

  • The spirit of the Harlem Renaissance survived in the 1930's
  • Before the 1920's , African American culture was unknown or unrecognized by the most white American

FACTS ABOUT HIM

  • Douglas created some of his best known painting in the 1930's
  • He was hired to create a mural for the library at Fisk university
