Earth's Mantle

Jeffery Nelson

The mantle is the part of the earth between the crust and the outer core. It is made up mostly of silicates. It is also composed of oxygen, silicon, magnesium, as well as iron, aluminum, calcium, sodium and potassium.

The mantle is roughly 2,970 km thick. Although common belief says it is in a liquid state, it is really mostly solid rock. But the magma seeps through the rock to the surface through chambers.

Three functions of the mantle
Magma travels through it to the surface through chambers and volcanos. Another function is to heat up the surface of the earth to support life.
Movement of tectonic plates over subduction zones.
