HYDRO ELECTRIC POWER CONS
-hydro dams can submerge vegetation which decays and creates greenhouse gasses.
-hydro dams can prevent the migration of fish up stream.
-prevents silt and nutrients needed by plants to get down stream to other plants.
-bacteria caused by decaying vegetation can change Mercury levels in water which can make fish dangerous to consume.
HYDRO ELECTRIC PROS
-hydro electric power plants do not cause sulfur dioxide, carbon dioxide, or create nuclear radiation.
-since it doesn't produce carbon dioxide it does not co tribute to acid rain or other problems caused by carbon.
OIL CONS
-produces carbon which contributes to global warming and acid rain.
-runoff from oil production sites and can dump toxins in nearby waters.
-non-renewable energy source so eventually oil resources will run out.
-production of oil requires lots of water.
PROS
-cleaner burning energy source.
BIOMASS CONS
-nitrous oxide, methane, and carbon are released during creating and using biomass.
-needs lots of space and water to produce biomass which can destroy animals habitats.
-wood is needed to use biomass which can release more carbon.
BIOMASS PROS
-renewable energy that can be used to make biogas, heat and electricity from organic waste, and biofuel.
-can be produced locally so transportation that can produce carbon is not needed.
NATURAL GAS CONS
-produces carbon dioxide.
-natural gas in non-renewable.
Like pipes are needed to produce natural gas which can disrupt the ecosystem.
PROS
-burns cleaner than other fossil fuels and coal.
-does not produce sulfur dioxide.
-does not pollute water or ground when burned.
GEOTHERMAL PROS
-almost entirely emission free.
-produces zero carbon.
-it is simple and reliable.
CONS
-prime sites are location specific.
-producing geothermal energy takes space which can disrupt habitats.
WIND ENERGY PROS
Does not create pollution.
-wind energy is renewable so is a limitless supply.
-wind turbines take up little space which does not harm habitats like other production sites.
SOLAR ENERGY PROS
-completely renewable.
-does not contribute to pollution.
CONS
-takes up lots of space that could be used for habitats.
PEAT PROS
-renewable
-can turn waste into energy.
-produces low carbon compared to other resources.
CONS
Produces carbon.
-requires water to grow.
