  • after the expected casualty rate for invading Japan caused them to use the atomic bomb

  • America dropped bombs on the 6th and 9th of August after the refusal by Japan to surrender

Casualties for Japan

  • Hiroshima - 90,000-166,000 dead
  • Nagasaki - 39,000-80,000 dead

Surrender

  • Japan surrendered August 15, 1945

The Sinking of Bismark

  • Commissioned - August 24, 1940
  • Sunk - May 26, 1941

Casualties

  • 2,200 German sailors died
  • 110 prisoners

  • largest German ship
  • initiated a 2 day chase of the allies to destroy it

  • The U.S. was letting British take weapons and supplies from the U.S. to Britain
  • FDR was wanting to get in the war
  • congress saw the Nazis as a threat

  • caused the U.S. to enter WWII
  • Germans later declared war on the U.S.

  • the U.S. was using an idea called island jumping against Japan
  • slow process, but was working

Atomic Bomb

  • weapon never before seen in human warfare
  • still debated today if it was necessary
  • ended the Pacific War between the U.S. and Japan
