The main villain here isn't Danglars, Fernand, or de'Villefort, it's bread. Also the characters hurt themselves.

There were two ways to die: the first was to tie his handkerchief to a bar around the window and hang himself; the second was to starve himself (Dumas 42)

A person who loves to get torn apart by a book should definitely read this, I recommend it.
