His oval face had lengthened; his smiling lips had taken on the firm lines of resolution; his eyebrows had become arched me beneath a single thoughtful wrinkle; his eyes wore a look of deep sadness with occasional flashes of dark hatred (Dumas 85);
The main villain here isn't Danglars, Fernand, or de'Villefort, it's bread. Also the characters hurt themselves.
There were two ways to die: the first was to tie his handkerchief to a bar around the window and hang himself; the second was to starve himself (Dumas 42)
