COMMON DISORDERS

  • Sleep apnea
  • Insomnia
  • Restless leg syndrome
  • Narcolepsy
  • Night terrors

INVESTIGATING SLEEP APNEA

  • Most common type - obstructive sleep apnea
  • Causes throat muscles to relax which blocks air flow to the lungs
  • It is very common, but often goes undiagnosed
  • Treated by surgery or by wearing a mouthpiece or breathing device

SIGNS OF SLEEP APNEA

  • Snoring
  • Partner notices breathing stops while they sleep
  • Waking up tired and not refreshed
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Difficulty staying awake when inactive

EFFECTS OF SLEEP DEPRIVATION

  • Lower stress threshold
  • Impaired memory
  • Trouble concentrating
  • Decreased optimism and sociability
  • Impaired creativity and innovation

  • Increased resting blood pressure
  • Increased food consumption and appetite
