CHRISTMAS IN FRANCE

REPORT BY CHRISTIAN JONES/FRENCH III/12/17/14

In France, Christmas is called Noel. This comes from the French phrase les bonnes nouvelles," which means "the good news" and refers to the gospel.

In southern France, some people burn a log in their homes from Christmas Eve until New Year's Day. This is called a Yule log.

On Christmas Eve, French children leave their shoes by the fireplace for Père Noel to fill, much like American Stockings.

French families used to have a Three Kings Cake with a bean hidden in it. Whoever found the bean in their slice was made King, or Queen, for the day.

THE CHRISTMAS TREE HAS NEVER BEEN PARTICULARLY POPULAR IN FRANCE

Once dinner is over and the family have retired to bed, they leave a fire burning and food and drink on the table in case the Virgin Mary calls in.

All of these things add up to unique traditions for Christmas in France
