Social Media

  • Plethora of tools available
  • Purpose?
  • Consistency
  • What is your digital baseline?
  • * increasing use in recruitment & selection
How many social media platforms do you use?

What is the purpose of your use of each of them, how do these platforms relate and interconnect?

Immediate priority - digital baseline to identify how this branding links into your overall brand

LinkedIn is considered as the future of recruitment by more and more employers, most employers undertake a social media search early on in the recruitment and selection process.

The Whys

  • Professional Profile
  • Connections Tool
  • Information
  • Applications - Job Search, Talent Sourcing
  • Publishing & Promotion
Professional Profile: this is your credibility and recognition building tool in the broader market. It is assumed if you are not online you are not anywhere, further given the market opportunity that is linked in, you are perceived to be lacking an advantage.
You need to positively and proactively manage your brand. It is 3 dimensional, it is embedded in your network, your depth, breadth and reach. Who you know - vicarious reputation.

Connections Tool - dynamic and ongoing vs static, opportunity to develop and maintain relationships and contribute to broader discussions

Industry Information: Through following companies and thought leaders you gain access to an incredible range of information in addition to the news feed and the power of your network.

Applications: Job Search and Talent sourcing - a very efficient tool for job searching (similar to Amazon functionality) and additional features - Premium (Individual, Job Search and Talent)

Publishing and Promotion: new feature to extend your brand and ability to publish across your network

What is your story?

  • Headline, Photo, Summary
  • Expertise: Experience & Education
  • Projects & other tangibles
  • Broader information: Courses, Organisations, Causes
  • Skills - endorsements
First impression:
General guideline - first person, engaging and consistent

Headline, Photo and Summary - what is your short pitch, what are your key strengths and experience, why do you do what you do, what's your personal manifesto, this needs to replace the in person introduction. Warm, engaging, energetic. Professional photo consistent with your brand.

Expertise - Focus on you within each role and your impact, not excessive descriptions about organisations

Projects - A fantastic feature to make your experience come alive through a variety of formats - YouTube, Slideshare, Project documents, Weblinks rather than just telling - showing, making theory tangible

Supporting information - Courses, Organisations and Causes provide a greater insight into the whole person, after all business is personal

Skills - relatively new feature, skills generated by algorithms but network is asked to endorse skills as you use LI, keep track of them and only accept those that are true and correct.

and beyond

  • Recommendations
  • Groups
  • Following
  • New feature - Professional Blog Tool
Recommendations - connectedness of networks, your success is my success, recommendations are a fantastic way to show support for your network. Seek them out particularly if you run your own business, far more credible than static testimonials.

Groups - Fantastic way to reach out and connect with local, national and international professionals, incredible source of information and ideas, great way to source information.

Following - Another tool to indicate depth and breadth of information, customising information of relevance

Blog tool - Excellent way to bring your blog into your personal brand in the context in which it occurs, rather than moving out from website to other sources of information

Connections

  • Dynamic
  • Touchpoints
  • Transparent
  • Connect, Contribute & Engage
Business development is an expensive exercise in time and process, when people move on these valuable contacts are lost, however with LI these can be maintained as professionals evolve throughout their careers. Dynamic vs static nature of business cards.

Provides a range of touch points to maintain contact with network - messaging, sharing, supporting, commenting, group participation, thanking for endorsements and so on.

Transparent - who knows who, very helpful, again vicarious success

The value of groups to engage and build relationships and knowledge, extend expertise.

Untitled Slide

  • Privacy
  • I don't know anyone
  • I haven't done enough
  • I am uncomfortable "selling myself"
Privacy - Develop and use your profile within your own privacy comfort zone, BUT don't use this as a reason not to engage

I don't know anyone - Quality over quantity, build relationships over time

I haven't done enough - This is not a bigger/better race, this is your story, you only need to be authentic. We all start somewhere

I am uncomfortable "selling myself" - This is very common, this isn't a sales medium but a professional platform
